Marriage Enrichment & Compatibility Research Study
Using the Arno Profile System
A Biblical Model of Helping Couples
Compassion Helplines, Inc. 24hr crisis line and Community outreach Ministry in connection with its “Faith Based Healthy Family Initiative” is seeking married and/or engaged couples (or those otherwise contemplating marriage) to participate in its Couples Counseling & Compatibility Research Study. The purpose of this research is to determine the effectiveness of couples counseling using the Arno Profile System – APS (also known as Creation Therapy), a biblical model for helping couples. The data gathered will demonstrate how well couples understand and are able to meet each other's needs and will include changes in couple distress over time, and assesses demographic characteristics such as age, ethnicity, and religious commitment.

A healthy marriage builds healthy families
What is Marriage?
“Marriage is and has always been a man and a woman, a husband and wife, two people who uniquely fit together for the purpose of laying the foundation for the most basic building block of society—the family.” (Christian Law Association –Traditional Marriage)
Marital conflicts combine problems of communication, alienation or some threat to the relationships security which lead to high anxiety and erosion of the marital system.
There is a growing sense of disillusionment due to feelings of neglect, disrespect, and feeling unloved. Feelings of anger or even rage, feelings of betrayal - whether real or perceived, loneliness, abandonment and growing feelings of inadequacy all contribute to the breakdown in the marriage.
Many conflicts center around financial issues, parenting styles, sexual intimacy difficulties, and even differences in lifestyles. A couple with marital conflicts may be contemplating divorce, even though they may never have verbalized it. (American Association of Christian Counselors)
Problem-solving is the family's ability to resolve problems on a level that maintains effective family functioning
One of the keys to successful family functioning is the family's ability to solve problems. All families have problems to deal with. However, research indicates that competent families solve problems as they arise; whereas, families that avoid problem-solving, or seem incapable of dealing with many of their problems have more difficulties (Epstein, Bishop, Ryan, Miller, & Keitner, 1993).
Focus on Family Strengths Research indicates that families who practice problem-solving techniques are more likely to pass this skill on to their children. Research has identified problem-solving as a factor that promotes resiliency in children. Problem-solving skills among family members will lead to more effective resolution of both instrumental and emotional family problems. National Network for Family Resiliency (1993).

WHAT IS ARNO PROFILE SYSTEM
In 1983, the National Christian Counselors Association was established as a non-profit corporation for the purpose of conducting research and developing a Scripturally based therapeutic procedure which would: (1) be reasonably easy to learn; (2) save pastors and Christian counselors precious time in their counseling sessions; and (3) produce effective, positive and more immediate results with those needing guidance.
During this time of research, the N.C.C.A. worked with more than 5,000 individuals. These were persons who sought counseling for depression, inter/intra-personal conflict, marriage and family dysfunctions and anxiety. The purpose of this research was to: (1) increase the effectiveness of the N.C.C.A.'s therapeutic procedure; (2) measure the percentage of success within a controlled environment; and (3) develop an accurate clinical testing procedure for initial identification of the counselee's temperament.
During this same time, in-depth studies were conducted on all current psychological tests and/or behavioral inventories. For many reasons, Dr. Richard G. Arno selected the FIRO-B, which was developed by Dr. Will Schultz, as its initial measuring device or questionnaire. The N.C.C.A. named its analysis procedure Temperament Analysis Profile (T.A.P.) and subsequently re-titled it in October 2000 to the Arno Profile System, which helps reveal the "hidden problems" that normally take the counselor seven or eight sessions to identify. Presently, over 3,000 pastors and Christian counselors rely on the Arno Profile System to aid them in their counseling efforts. These counselors report an accuracy rate of over ninety percent (90%) in identifying an individual's correct (in born) temperament.
The Arno Profile System report does not measure a person's behavior; it identifies a person's inborn temperament. Who God created us to be (temperament) and who we became (through learned behavior) can be vastly different. Environment and learned behavior may magnify or lessen the intensity of a person's temperament. We need to find out who we really are and find ways to become the person God wants us to become instead of the person we have learned to be. Using the APS system the counselor helps the couple bring balance within their temperament as they learn how to meet their needs in godly ways. As you learn to appreciate yourselves and your partner’s unique design and begin to work toward meeting your respective temperament needs, you will be encouraged as you see positive changes. ( )
The temperament identification provided in the Arno Profile System identifies three separate human interactions, Inclusion (social orientation/intellectual energies), Control (decision making abilities or inabilities) and Affection (interaction in deep relationships). For example, a person may be a Sanguine in the Inclusion (social) area, a Melancholy in control (decision making) area and Supine in Affection (deep relationships) area. It also identifies each one of these interactions in two ways, expressed (what we say we want) and wanted (what we really want).
THE FIVE TEMPERAMENTS
Dr. Richard G. Arno identified a fifth temperament. Traditionally, there have been four temperaments, Melancholy, Sanguine, Choleric and Phlegmatic. The fifth temperament that was identified by the N.C.C.A. research over 14 years ago is called the Supine. This identification area describes a person who, by their very nature, is a servant and feels that they have little or no value.
Today, marriage as sanctioned in the scriptures is under severe attack. Our study is aimed at establishing the value of marriage/pre-marital counseling from a Christian/faith-based perspective. We are interested in determining what couples report works in helping them to stabilize their marriages and/or their relationships prior to marriage.
We invite you to participate in our study and take advantage of this unique opportunity to strengthen your marriage.
PARTICIPATION
Who may participate in this study? We are seeking married and engaged couples to participate in our study. You will be asked to participate in a minimum of 5 sessions. You will be asked to fill out a consent form & reports after each session that will help us to gather the data needed for our study.
