NCCA-Certified [Non-Licensed] Temperament Therapist
An NCCA-Certified Temperament Therapist is a faith-based counselor who specializes in using the Arno Profile System (APS) temperament model to provide biblically sound guidance and support. While not licensed to diagnose mental health disorders or provide clinical therapy in a secular context, they are qualified to offer spiritual and emotional counseling to individuals, couples, and families within their scope of training and certification. Their work is ministry-focused and adheres to the ethical guidelines set forth by the National Christian Counselors Association (NCCA).
Key Areas of Work:
- Temperament Assessments:
- Conduct temperament analyses using the APS model to help clients understand their God-given traits, emotional needs, strengths, and areas of potential stress or conflict.
- Provide personalized insights into how temperament impacts relationships, communication, decision-making, and spiritual growth.
- Biblically Based Counseling:
- Offer spiritual guidance and counseling rooted in Scripture, addressing issues such as identity, purpose, forgiveness, and spiritual growth.
- Help clients align their lives with biblical principles, promoting emotional healing and a closer relationship with God.
- Emotional and Relational Issues:
- Address emotional struggles such as stress, anxiety, and unresolved anger using biblical counseling techniques.
- Help clients navigate relational challenges, including marital conflicts, parenting issues, and interpersonal struggles, using temperament insights.
- Marriage and Family Counseling:
- Support couples and families in understanding each other’s temperaments to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and foster healthy relationships.
- Provide premarital and marital counseling based on temperament compatibility and biblical principles.
COACHING, PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT & CHURCH/MINISTRY SUPPORT
- Life Coaching and Personal Development:
- Guide clients in setting and achieving personal goals, managing stress, and improving self-awareness using their unique temperament traits.
- Encourage personal growth and character development from a biblical perspective.
- Church and Ministry Support:
- Work alongside pastors and ministry leaders to offer counseling services within a church or ministry context.
- Provide workshops or seminars on temperament and biblical counseling for congregations, ministry teams, or community groups.
- Referral: Recognize when issues fall outside their scope of practice (e.g., severe mental health disorders, or legal matters) and refer clients to licensed professionals or specialized services, as needed.
- Ministry Context: Their work is considered a form of pastoral care or Christian ministry, not clinical mental health treatment, and is typically conducted in settings such as churches, non-profit Christian counseling centers, or independent ministries.
NCCA Licensed Clinical Pastoral Counselor
An NCCA Licensed Clinical Pastoral Counselor is a certified professional trained to provide faith-based counseling that integrates theology with psychology, with the Arno Profile System (APS) temperament therapy serving as their foundational model. The APS model enables the counselor to assess clients' God-given temperament traits, identify their unique emotional and spiritual needs, and address areas of stress, conflict, or imbalance from a biblical perspective. It also helps the counselor understand how temperament influences relationships, stress responses, decision-making, and overall well-being.
While the APS model is the cornerstone of their practice, NCCA Licensed Clinical Pastoral Counselors also integrate other biblically sound therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral techniques, trauma-informed care, and principles of positive psychology etc. This holistic approach ensures that counseling is deeply rooted in Scripture while remaining practical, effective, and relevant for addressing real-life emotional, relational, and spiritual challenges.
The ultimate goal of an NCCA Clinical Pastoral Counselor is to guide individuals toward healing, transformation, and alignment with God’s purpose for their lives, offering care that nurtures the body, mind, and spirit.
Specialization Through Board Certification
After achieving licensure, NCCA Clinical Pastoral Counselors have the opportunity to pursue board certifications in specialized areas of counseling. These areas may include marriage and family counseling, addiction recovery, domestic violence intervention, trauma recovery, grief support, and spiritual growth, among others. Through continued education and advanced training, these board-certified specialties allow counselors to tailor their approach to meet the specific needs of individuals, couples, or families. This ensures that clients receive highly skilled and biblically integrated care in areas of deep concern, rooted in both scriptural truth and therapeutic expertise.
NCCA Licensed Clinical Pastoral Counselors often serve in churches, Christian counseling centers, or independent practices, offering compassionate, specialized, and expert care that reflects the love and wisdom of Christ.
Ethical and Professional Boundaries should be followed as set for by the N.C.C.A. Code of Ethics.
- Referral: Recognize when issues fall outside their scope of practice (e.g., severe mental health disorders, or legal matters) and refer clients to licensed professionals or specialized services, as needed.
- Ministry Context: Their work is considered a form of pastoral care or Christian ministry and is typically conducted in settings such as churches, non-profit Christian counseling centers, or independent ministries.
